The Influences of 'Inception'

As a cinema enthusiast who grew up enamored of directors from Nicholas Roeg to George Lucas, Christopher Nolan said, “I’m mindful of the great filmmakers I carry with me.” That mélange of influences manifests itself in many ways in “Inception.” But as with any dream, who’s to say exactly where it came from? “Who knows?” Mr. Nolan said. “These things aren’t always conscious. Sometimes these things are suggested to you, and afterwards you go: ‘Oh, yeah. Maybe he’s got a point.’ I try not to be conscious in my influences. I try and just do what feels right.” Here, at least, are a few of the filmmakers he knowingly drew upon for “Inception.” DAVE ITZKOFF

A Story of Batman, Inception & a Black Superman t-shirt

2005. Cathay Cineleisure, Orchard, Singapore.

My friend and I went off to see Batman Begins, the anticipated ‘Re-boot’ of the Batman Franchise that promised to be a darker and more realistic portrayal of the caped crusader. While we were waiting for the door to open, I notice that almost everyone was looking at me and giggling. Later, I realized that I was (unintentionally) wearing a Black Superman T-Shirt!! HAHA So there I was in the premiere of a Batman movie wearing a Superman t-shirt!

Flashforward to..

2008. Empire cinema, Brunei.

The anticipated sequel to Batman Begins has arrived! So for old time sake, I decided to wear the same Black Superman T-Shirt (intentionally this time) to watch The Dark Knight. Coincidentally, I saw a guy wearing a white shirt (or sweater I think) with the Batman logo.

Flashforward to..

2010.

When The Dark Knight made billions of dollars, it was obvious that the studio wanted the director, Christopher Nolan, to direct a third Batman movie. However, Nolan said that he will only do another Batman movie if the studio gives him large sum of money so he can make whatever movie he wants without any studio interference. What do you get? A mind bending movie like Inception.

It may not be a Batman movie but it’s from the same director so I’m this an exception to the rule: When the time comes for me to watch Inception on theatres, I will be there wearing the same BLACK SUPERMAN T-SHIRT!

Hopefully I’ll still maintain this tradition when Batman 3 gets released in 2012 and the ‘Superman reboot’ that will be produced by Nolan and written by David Goyer (basically from the same guys that did Batman Begins).

Oh and just for fun, I’ll try to recall whatever I’ll be dreaming about after watching Inception. It’ll be posted in my Wordpress blog. http://trylobyte.wordpress.com/

Read my previous writings on my dreams:

Here’s one where I outlined several instances where I visit the same place in my dreams again and again.
http://trylobyte.wordpress.com/2007/11/29/i-have-a-dream/

This one is a much more elaborate exploration on the dreams that I’ve had. I attempt to define several properties of my dreams.

Dreaming the Inception

Just as I promised, I will try to recall what I dreamed about the night after watching Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’. It was a mind bending action thriller about a group of people attempting to plant the seeds of an idea inside a person’s mind through dreams. A two hours plus movie with a plot like that will surely plant something in my mind that will manifest in my dreams. Like I said before, I’m not a lucid dreamer and I prefer not to have full control of my dreams. I like to see what kind of crazy stuff my mind can create in my dreams. I expected to dream about something related to the plot of the movie OR something involving dream within a dream which I have experienced many times. Both didn’t happen but what I dreamt about were interesting and copied some of the imagery from the movie. This is what I was able to recall/record. Enjoy!

I’m watching an Indonesian TV show (sinetron) about a some demon disguising as a man who tries to create mischief among people. The director shouted “CUT!” and suddenly I was no longer watching the show on TV but actually at the backstage of set where they are shooting the TV show! All the actors froze and things started to float in zero gravity. I was one of the crew members who had to pick up the props and the ‘frozen’ actors back to the store room.

——

I’m in a room with lots of people and we were hearing a briefing about crimes and their respective punishments (important later!). After the briefing ended, I was called upon by a group of girls whom some I recognized as my ex-classmates. One of the them asked me if I know the guy who sat in the far corner in my row because one of the girls thinks he’s cute. I told them I didn’t catch a glimpse of that guy. They told me that he just got out of the room wearing a helmet and rode off in a Pizza Hut bike. Trying to help these girls and also to satisfy my curiousity, I took my car and gave that man a chase. I chased him through the city during the heavy rain. Had to navigate through the all the cars and trucks. At one point, the man got off his Pizza Hut bike and were picked up by his friend in a black van. The chase continued while an adrenaline pumping music was playing (yes! Even Hans Zimmer’s score made it to my dream!!). I finally managed to get a glimpse of the guy and I laughed because I didn’t get what the big fuss was about among the girls HAHA

I finished telling my brother the story (all of that was a flahsback). I went off to the city (it’s still in the same metropolis) but it was a bright sunny day. I met my old friend with her little cousin/nephew? (forgot about this…it was little girl). They were trying to go somewhere but didn’t know how to (If I’m not mistaken it was an amusement park). I showed them the way to get there either by train or the bus.

——

I’m in a classic Japanese Temple like building. I was being chased by bad guys and I had to go through a series of Japanese sliding doors to escape. It was like going through a maze. Eventually, I ended on the far side of the temple where an elderly Japanese couple reside. Me and two Asians (a guy and a girl) took refuge in this part of the temple. The first thing we need to do was to take a shower. I wasn’t quick enough to take the two good shower rooms so I had to go to the large and shared shower room that looks like it came straight out of prison. Next thing I know, I suddenly had an orange jumpsuit on and they were others too in that shower room wearing the same thing.

A North Korean soldier (I just knew he was North Korean) came in. Surprisingly, he was a bit friendly and joked around a bit. People laughed but I thought he was lame. He started to test us by asking several questions. He asked one guy about the punishment for a particular crime. The guy got it wrong but surprisingly he wasn’t punished. My friend, who was also there, answered it correctly because he remembered it from a briefing earlier (THE SAME BRIEFING THAT I HAD FROM THE PREVIOUS DREAM!) The North Korean soldier then asked me a question about a tribe called ‘Sukoi?’ (or something like that). I honestly didn’t know the answer so I said some bullshit. He gave me a disappointed look and told me that it is a Greek tribe that lived in Japan (BTW, It doesn’t really exist…I googled). That North Korean soldier didn’t like me that much and I didn’t like him too.

So what weird dreams did you have after watching the movie?

By the time I finally go to Comic Con….

By the time I finally go to Comic Con….

….The Justice League movie would be announced (all superheroes will be played by Ryan Reynolds)

…..the Cannes film festival would be held in San Diego

……JJ Abrams would announce a new crazy TV show and then abandon it after one episode.

….Quentin Tarantino would direct “Bite me!” a movie that is a homage to the Vampire genre of the late 00s and will include reference to Twilight & True Blood every 10 minutes in the movie

…James Cameron would still be F***ing rich

…Christopher Nolan would direct a movie adaptation of ‘Snakes & Ladders’ board game….AND SOMEHOW IT WOULD LOOK AWESOME!!!!

…….George Lucas would announce Star Wars Episode 3.7 1/2: THE 2nd CLONE WARS  following the adventure of a young Jedi we don’t really care about on a planet that has never been mentioned before…IN 4D!!

Actually, everything would be in 4D except for movies by Nolan and Tarantino…respect for those guys

Who will direct Superman?

While taking a break from writing Batman 3, David Goyer (Blade) told Christopher Nolan (Dark Knight, Inception) about how he would do a ‘Superman’ film. Nolan loved the idea and decided to pitch it to Warners Bros studio. Nolan wouldn’t be directing it (he’s busy with Batman 3) but he will produce it with his wife Emma Thomas and David Goyer is writing the script. Instead, Nolan and the gang is looking for a director that would share their vision while also be able to bring something unique to the table.

The candidates so far are:

Darren Aronofsky

Requeim for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, The Black Swan

STATUS: In talks.

Matt Reeves

Cloverfield, Let Me in

STATUS: “I was surprised. I really have no idea if any of that is true. It’s certainly an amazing project, but I would be surprised…”

Duncan Jones

Moon

STATUS:“About Superman… I’m going to say something really cheesy; Can’t talk about it, but an honor to be on the list. Interesting times!”

Zack Snyder

300, Watchmen

STATUS: Offered but declined.

Tony Scott

Top Gun, Enemy of the State

STATUS: Unknown

Jonathan Liebesman

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

STATUS: Scheduling conflict with Clash of the Titans 2

Ben affleck

Gone Baby Gone, The Town

STATUS: Declined

Personally, Darren Aronofsky is my top choice with Matt Reeves & Duncan Jones as second choices. I like Zack Snyder and Tony Scott but I don’t think I would want to see their ‘style’ in this Superman reboot.

Who wins?

I love movies that:

  • Makes me think
  • Have anti-heroes
  • Are told in structurally creative way
  • Are loud and fun action rides with lots of ‘blow shit up moments’

The Batman Complex

video by themanbatman

story by trylobyte

Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) suffers from paranoid schizophrenia in which he imagines himself as a crime fighter. As his delusions gets more elaborate and his health deteriorates, it was apparent that he suffers from the ‘Batman Complex’ - a rare and esoteric psychological disorder that mysteriously involve the ‘Batman’ archetype. The doctors had no choice but to turn to the only person who can help.

Enter Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a maverick psychologist with a dark past who is well known for his unconventional treatment of various mental illnesses (many dubbed him as the ‘Indiana Jones of Psychology’). More importantly, he had encountered and treated ‘Batman Complex’ before. He assembles a team comprising of:

  • Dr Jonathan Crane (Cillian Murphy) - a fellow psychologist
  • Arthur (Joseph Gordon Levitt) - an expert in subconscious security
  • Eames (Tom Hardy) - an old friend of Cobb back in his corporate espionage days.

Using a sophisticated dreamsharing technology, Cobb’s team enters Wayne’s mind in order to perform an ‘Inception’ - planting an idea that would stabilise his personalities.

However, they quickly find out that Bruce Wayne’s mind is not what it seems. His mental defense mechanism/projections are stronger than anticipated and performing a successful Inception proves to be tricky.

Dream Level 1 - City

The team is caught in a middle of a deadly battle between Bruce Wayne’s fractured subconscious (manifested as a costumed vigilante ‘Batman’ and the mobs). They also come face to face with a character called ‘The Joker’ (Heath Ledger), a mysterious projection that is hell bent on thwarting Cobb’s team at every dream level.

Dream Level 2 - Hotel

Cobb and the team meets Bruce Wayne, a well built mischievous billionaire playboy who charms people with magic tricks.

Dream Level 3 - Snowy mountains

Cobb’s team meets a bearded Bruce Wayne who has issues with his dad (Liam Neeson). Bruce Wayne is ‘killed’ in this level which prompted Cobb to go deeper into the subconscious to rescue him.

Dream Level 4 - A dark maze like prison

Cobb faces his dark past and it is revealed that ‘The Joker’ is the creation of his own mind, not Wayne. Cobb and Wayne come to terms with their respective past.

Meanwhile, Crane is caught between the mobs and Batman while Arthur protects billionaire Bruce Wayne and Eames fights an army of ninjas at a snow fortress. Wayne gets rescued and Inception was successfully achieved as Bruce Wayne stood courageously among the swarm of bats.

A ‘synchronized kick’ brought everyone back to reality. Bruce experiences a gradual mental recovery. One day, he sees a girl getting mugged and Bruce jumps in to rescue her. She thank him and Bruce feels happy that he has done something ‘heroic’ for real.

In the final scene, Cobb stares at the mirror. He starts to cry and laugh..letting out all his emotions because he completed the mission and also came to terms with his painful past. He continues laughing….his laugh gets higher…and higher…..wait, is he….

Kickass Exam/Revision Music #6: Like a Dog Chasing Cars - Hans Zimmer

‘The Dark Knight’ managed to work the larger than life superhero vs supervillain thing into a contemporary urban crime drama genre. This music perfectly captured the themes of escalation, chaos, fear and the heroism that triumphs over them. This music was too awesome that it wasn’t even in the movie!! You only hear several parts of it scattered throughout the movie but never in its full complete version.

Bonus: I edited the Dark Knight car chase scene (originally with no music) with this music. Turned out to be better than I thought! http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8eej7_dark-knight-chase-scene-music-added_shortfilms
